Preah Vihear and Koh Ker Temples Attract Over 120,000 Visitors in February

Preah Vihear: February 2024 saw a significant influx of tourists to the historical sites of Preah Vihear and Koh Ker temples, with visitor numbers surpassing 120,000. This data was revealed in a press release by the National Authority of Preah Vihear on March 4, 2024, offering a detailed breakdown of the tourism statistics for the month.

According to the release, Koh Ker, a renowned temple resort, welcomed 5,496 domestic visitors throughout February. Meanwhile, the majestic Preah Vihear temple attracted a total of 6,647 tourists, comprising 5,012 domestic and 1,635 international guests.

Despite these impressive figures, there was a noted decrease in tourism compared to January 2024, which saw over 160,000 visitors enjoying the cultural and historical richness of these sites. This decline underscores the variability in tourism trends and the impact of various factors on travel decisions.

The Preah Vihear temple, nestled in the northern reaches of Cambodia in Natural Village, Sraem Commune, Choam Ksan District, Preah Vihear Province, boasts a distinguished status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since its recognition at the 32nd Meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Quebec City, Canada, on July 7, 2008.

Koh Ker, situated approximately 120 km from Siem Reap and 60 km from Preah Vihear, is an ancient architectural marvel from the 10th century (928-942 AD), constructed under the reign of Jayavarman IV. Dedicated to the deity Iso in the Brahmanism tradition, Koh Ker is notable for its unique seven-tiered pyramid structure, reaching a height of 35 meters.

These historic sites continue to be a focal point for visitors, drawn by their rich cultural heritage and the serene beauty of their surroundings. The Preah Vihear and Koh Ker temples not only serve as a testament to Cambodia's glorious past but also play a significant role in promoting tourism and cultural understanding in the present day.
